Reflection on my Oral Presentation

Before Oral Presentation

Our group, Tinky Wiki took effort to ensure that the outline of our presentation flows smoothly. However, our group did not have the luxury of time to rehearse together. We had planned to meet the weekend before the presentation to rehearse, but we ended up mending everyone's slides instead. There were overlap of points among group members and we had to sort them out to avoid repeatative points. Through this sorting out process, we managed to organise the flow of points and were able to understand the parts that our team-mates will be presenting. We also racked our brains to come up with ideas to make our presentation slides more interesting and hence, the idea of putting our pictures into the slides to spice things up a little. It was great working with my team members Jia Min and Shin Ye and I had fun laughing at all the silly jokes we made throughout the whole process.

We only managed to start rehearsing together before the presentation itself. Rehearsing together is important because it is essential that we run through the whole presentation once to make sure everything runs smoothly. During the rehearsal, the other group members acted as audience while the presentor presents her slides. This allowed the presentor to practice interaction such as eye contact with the "mini audience" present.

During the Oral Presentation

I was very nervous when I stood in front of the screen. I had rehearsed on my own umpteen times at home during the weekend but when I looked at the audience, my palms start to sweat and I felt the ground spinning. I ended up staring in space for a short while in the beginning and I hoped it wasn't too obvious. Things got better when I started to look for individual faces instead of looking at the audience as a whole. I glanced across the room and Rebecca's smiley face caught my glance. At that point of time, I felt a sense of relieve and managed to continue on with the presentation more smoothly. Thanks Rebecca!

After the Presentation

Initially, I kept asking myself uncontrollably in my head if I had performed "okay" during the presentation. I was worried that I had not performed well and that would put my whole semester's work in vain since the one of the course's aims was to improve our presenatation skills. However, I started thinking through after the lesson and felt that it is the learning experience that matters. As Science students rarely got the chance for presenations, I was glad to have gone through this "nightmare". I was also glad to have been given such exposure because I realise that presentations are bound to take place in the working world and I need more practice in handling that. =).

  1. Hi Hazel!

I agree with you that as a Science student, such exposure of public speaking is rare.Isnt it great we took this module? We now have a better idea of what it means to make our presentation less wordy, and use more illustrations to compensate for the emptiness on the slides.

You were nervous? I really could not tell. Rebecca's smile must have been effective =) because I thought you spoke confidently! Although you did refer to your notes once in awhile, i felt it was not a major problem because the pause was not very long. You went back to your point quite quickly. But of course it would have been better if you did not have to refer to them at all.I guesss with all the information you want to convey, it is inevitable that a certain amount of memory work is still needed.

As a group, we felt that certain parts of the presentation seemed repetitive. Was it because you want to emphasise on your points? The visual aids (especially the one with all your faces, and the way you ended the presentation)were certainly entertaining! However, as discussed in class, certain level of humour could be acceptable depending on how formal the presentation is. If it were a real life situation, it might not be appropriate.

Lastly,my group felt that it would be great if the other members not presenting could be more aware of their actions, to prevent any distractions. But after reading your blog, i can understand how relieved you must have felt. I saw you smiling widely at the corner.

Other than that, the presentation was easy to follow, and we could tell that your team was well prepared!

  2. Hi Hazel!

During your presentation, I felt that you were very composed. Your voice projection was good. Overall, I think your speech was well done.

However, I felt that perhaps it would be better if you omit holding the script in your hands. I understand that it feels more secured in case you have forgetten the points.

But for a moment, it gave me the impression that you are not familiar with your content even though you do not refer to it. In addition, without the script, it would makes you appear more confident.

That aside, I felt that the slides were done exceptionally well as there were no conflicting colours against the background.

Others might felt that having the pictures of the team was inappropriate due to the level of formality, however, I thought it was rather a good way to start the presentation. It made the environment comfortable before being serious.

However, I felt that the concluding part where everyone jumped to end the presentation was a little too informal. Best to strike a balance between the formality.

Another point I like to mention was that, it was distracting when you and Jiamin were discussing behind the podium when Shinye was presenting. It gave audience the impression that Shinye was making a mistake in her presentation and the discussion volume was a little too loud.

Overall, I thought the group made a good presentation. Thank you for your hard work!

  3. Hi Hazel!

I could see that you were quite nervous at the start of your presentation. However, you were able to remain calm and continue to give your presentation with confidence. You had a clear pronunciation of words although I felt that you might be speaking a bit fast than usual. (Not a major problem ^_^) In addition, you had engaged the audience well by having a good eye contact with them.

As my group has mentioned, we were distracted by the little conversation between you and Jiamin while it was Shinye’s turn to present. This would give the audience the impression that the team was not being professional. I guessed it would be more appropriate to remain silent while waiting for the rest of the presentation to end.

For the presentation slides, I could see the efforts made by your team on using visual aids to captivate the audience’s attention. The presentation of your ideas were clear and easy to understand.

Lastly, I must say that you did a very good job during the Q&A session. I felt you had provided excellent answers to the questions posed and this showed that you had a strong knowledge of content for your project.

    Well done Hazel! =)
